Definition of Employee Motivation

Figure – 1.0: Expected outcomes in employee motivation

Ruban (2004)

Motivate is a Latin word that means "to move" & it has been defined by many researchers. As stated by Tosi, Mero, and Rizzo (as cited by Helms, 2002, p169), motivation has both psychological and managerial meanings. In the psychological view, motivation refers to the internal mental state of a person that relates to the initiation, direction, persistence, intensity, and termination of behaviors. The management view of the motivation is to induce others in order to produce results desired or outlined by the organization. Further, Curral & Marques (2009) defined motivation as dependent on 3 psychological processes: arousal, direction, and intensity.

According to the research done by Perumal (2008), there is an association between employee motivation and employee demographics such as gender, age, race, and organizational level. Strombeck & Wakefield (2008) explain that motivation is dependent upon the individual and the situation. Therefore, managers or leaders should be able to identify the most suitable motivation factor or mechanism for each demographic to improve their performance. Davis, & Singh, (2011) have described that motivation is system-oriented & Chung, & Ross (1977) have emphasized that motivation is goal-oriented.

As explained by Haniza (2011), employee performance can be influenced by a variety of factors, including training and development opportunities, the working environment, the employee-employer relationship, job security, and the company's overall policies and strategies for rewarding workers. Among those, motivation, which comes with rewards, is one of the most important factors (Carraher, R, Gibbson & Buckley, 2006). According to Jonson & jonson (2003) motivation can be defined as an individual's willingness to put forth effort toward obtaining goals that they believe are relevant and worthwhile.

  2. Yes, there are many ways to define motivation in the industry, there are 3 main components of motivation Direction-what is trying to do, Effort- how hard to do and Persistence- How long keep trying (Arnold et al, 1991). On the other hand, motivation of your self is totally differed from motivating other people, while motivating others is direct them to achieve goals but motivating yourself is individual directing to take something we want (Armstrong, 2010). Motivation is also dcan be defined as internally generated drive to achieve a goal that people looking for and manger’s role is to motivate people to achieve the goal (Skripak, 2016). So, your argument is totally agreeable level.

Keeping the employee motivation, commitment and job involvement up, is always rewarding to a business; as motivated and committed employees are more productive.

  4. Yes, the value of a highly engaged team to a company cannot be emphasised. Employee productivity increases when efficiency, dedication, and satisfaction improve. Companies may also notice a decrease in absenteeism and increased knowledge sharing, which leads to the dissemination of innovative ideas (Napolitano, 2016). As a result, businesses must ensure that they understand and implement numerous motivational factors into the workplace (Kalimullah, 2010).

  6. Agreed your comment. motivation can be an extremely powerful management tool, designed to help the manufacturer or advertiser to sell more goods. Its aim is to expose the market situation, explain it and suggest courses of action which will lead to desired changes. It is a way of looking at a problem rather than a collection of specialist techniques and is strictly practical. Hence it can be used alongside other market research tools for the solution of marketing problems and can be applied to a wide range of business activities

    1. Yes. However, Spector (2003) states the internal state of motivation that person can engage in particular behaviors and that motivation can be viewed from two angles. On the one hand motivation encompasses direction in which we select particular behavior from choice of behaviors referring to the amount of effort and intensity that the employee put into a task. The other angle is desire to achieve the certain goal which drives from individual own desires and needs
